Who says media doesn't have an impact on politics?
The New Yorker has a great feature article on the brilliant mind behind the hit show , who, it turns out freely refers to himself a "right-wing nut job".
The article is really damned disturbing, especially in its discussion of how
24 shows the good guys using torture because of "extreme circumstances", when the US and International law clearly forbids that as an excuse (they even cite the laws and treaties involved). The worst part is when a delegation of folks from the US Army show up and ask them to stop showing good guys using torture as acceptable, and that same brilliant mind blows of the meeting.
One might call this a classic liberal slam on a hot-button political topic, but as the article shows, the law is crystal clear on this issue - and
24 is clearly and consistently suggesting the law is otherwise, and that good guys breaking the law "for the right reason" is OK.
If you wonder why nobody is talking about impeaching Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, or any of those other yahoos for their clear-but-hidden-in-BS use of torture, this makes a whole lot more sense of it.
I used to think
24 was a brilliant show, but not I am not so sure... it may just be a classic case of subversion hiding behind "creative forces" (sic)...
