So while I was not online in time to hear about the LJ Content Strike before it started, I did log on this afternoon to post, and found our about it, and abstained from posting until the requisite window passed.
I have to agree with those who say that the new ownership's handling of the recent policy changes sucked rocks. And the censorship, aak! WTF?!
I really like LJ, but even more than that, freedom of expression is critical, and if LJ starts messing with it, I WILL go elsewhere.
Oddly enough, I don't think this is just the new management, I think there are some folks in the middle somewhere who have an issue... right after I joined, there was a big to-do over a bunch of accounts that were deleted for "inappropriate content", which supposedly meant exploitation of children, etc. - but also included many blogs for abuse survivors, run-of-the-mill pagans, etc. It turned out the rather long list of "bad users" was generated by a bunch of right-wing christian nut cases, and for some reason the LJ staff just went ahead and purged the whole list of accounts without questioning it...
Maybe it was some other mid-management flake who made that call... but I guess my point is that for some reason LJ seems to just struggle with this. Of course, so has Google and lots of other Web 2.0 places - though LJ does seem to pull some real boners from time to time.
Here's hoping the management catches on - without users, LJ will wither and die just like anything else.
